It's arguably the most competitive and unpredictable league in Europe and it's now available for you to watch live on your computer if you're a Betfair customer. Here's the low-down on everything you need to know about the brilliant Bundesliga.

The Bundesliga has developed a reputation as one of European football's most competitive and exciting leagues. Stadiums are regularly sold out, providing a passionate and raucous backdrop to high-tempo matches. Germany's positive play at the 2010 World Cup was no surprise to regular Bundesliga viewers, as it's a league where the safety-first approach is deeply unpopular.

Bayern Munich are unquestionably German football's dominant force, but a closer look at recent history suggests their stranglehold on the league title isn't as strong as you might suspect. In the last ten seasons Bayern have won the league six times, but there have been four other champions in the same period. Wolfsburg racked up 80 goals on their way to the title in 2009, Stuttgart took advantage of a Bayern meltdown (the Bavarians finished fourth) in 2007, Thomas Schaaf's enterprising Werder Bremen claimed glory in 2004, while fire-haired tactician Matthias Sammer led Borussia Dortmund to the title in 2002. To put this plaudit-sharing into context, Italy has had four different champions in the same period, while England and Spain have had just three.

This season Bayern's dominance is being challenged again. Jurgen Klopp's effervescent Borussia Dortmund are seven points clear at the top, and 14 ahead of Bayern. Like many Bundesliga sides, Dortmund have had to rein in their spending and give opportunities to young players, and their faith in the next generation has been rewarded. Teenage wing wizard Mario Gotze has caught the eye of Bundestrainer Joachim Low, while midfielders Kevin Grosskreutz and Nuri Sahin (both 22 years old) display maturity and tactical awareness beyond their years. 21-year-old Japanese forward Shinji Kagawa is proving the bargain of the season, and defenders Mats Hummels (21), Neven Subotic (21) and Marcel Schmelzer (22) have contributed to the league's best defence.

Bayern have struggled without injured Dutch duo Arjen Robben and Mark Van Bommel, while talismanic Frenchman Franck Ribery is yet to find his best form. However, anyone poised to write Bayern off should consider last season. Louis van Gaal's head was on the chopping block after the club won just five of their first 13 Bundesliga games, but not only did the Dutch coach survive, he led his players to the German league and cup double and the Champions League final.

Such dramatic turnarounds are de rigeur in the Bundesliga, and that may be because it has a four-week winter break. Last term Stuttgart used the mid-season breather to transform themselves from relegation dogfighters into Europa League qualifiers. The break can also see a club's momentum vanish - Bayer Leverkusen were last season's early pacesetters, but ended up finishing fourth.

In addition to Dortmund's impressive young guns, the Bundesliga features a glittering array of talent. Wolfsburg's much-coveted striker Edin Dzeko has scored an incredible 64 goals in just 106 games. Struggling Schalke would be doing even worse if Real Madrid alumni Raul and Klass-Jan Huntelaar weren't banging in goals, while Bayern boast the attacking talents of Robben, Ribery and World Cup hero Thomas Muller.

Now Betfair is offering customers the chance to see Bundesliga matches via your computer courtesy of its Live Video service, starting with Friday's fascinating clash between St Pauli (2.54) and Kaiserslautern (2.98). Both teams were promoted to the top flight last term, and are currently clear of the relegation zone.
