Rank Group announced in a trading update today that although group revenue declined by 8% for the 41 weeks to 12 October compared to the same period last year, the group delivered a much improved performance over the last six weeks, with like-for-like revenue up by 5%. The company said this revenue profile reflected the timing of the Gambling Act – implemented on 1 September 2007 – and the recent impact of measures taken to redress the negative effects of the Act. The company added that trading at its Spanish bingo clubs business, Top Rank Espana, remained challenging as a result of the current difficulties facing the Spanish economy, while its Blue Square online sports betting and gaming operation continued to be held back by the disappointing performance of its sportsbook arm.

Everest Poker has launched the VIP Summit Club, a new reward program for VIP players. The VIP Summit Club will be operated by Everest for all new and existing players, Everest brand manager Ken Berman said: “We strongly believe the VIP Summit Club is the most transparent and beneficial poker loyalty program available online. We have listened to players from all poker rooms, all over the world and have tailored our product to address all the issues, both positive and negative, of existing loyalty programs.”

Extrabet, a wholly owned subsidiary of IG Group, has launched the first UK Gambing Commission-licensed online casino to run on the Chartwell platform. Darold Parken, chief executive of Chartwell, said: “This event marks a significant milestone for Chartwell, the IG Group, and online gaming regulation as a whole. Delivering the software solution to power the UK’s first licensed online gaming site elevates our company and technology to the next level and I am proud of every member of our team for achieving this industry-first.”

Cantor Gaming has entered into a second agreement with slot machine manufacturer Atronic to deliver slot games for Cantor’s handheld and online gaming formats. The new games are based on Atronic slots currently played in casinos across 80 countries, including the popular Sphinx-themed games. The first agreement signed in July this year was to bring mobile gaming technology to the casino floor and sportsbook of the US$1bn M Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, due to open in spring 2009.

Paddy Power to expand UK estate in the North West

Ireland’s largest bookmaker Paddy Power has appointed real estate consultancy services specialist Colliers CRE to help it acquire new betting shop sites across the North West of England.

Paddy Power already has around 60 shops in the south of the country and is looking to expand its estate of shops around Manchester and the North West of England. It aims to grow its UK estate to over 200 shops in the next three years.

David Berger, regional head of Development at Paddy Power, said: “Colliers CRE has a market leading reputation and a strong track record of representing aggressively acquisitive occupiers and we’re confident that they can help us achieve our targets.”

Nick McAllester, Associate Director at Colliers CRE Manchester, said: “Paddy Power is an extremely strong brand throughout the betting world thanks in part to its humorous and sometimes controversial advertising as well as its innovative betting offers.  We are progressing well with acquiring a number of new shops for Paddy Power and we look forward to continue helping them expand rapidly in the North West.”

Google Gambles on Ad Revenue

ImageFollowing years under a self-imposed blanket ban on online gambling advertisements, Google will again from today allow UK and EEA based gaming companies to target advertising towards consumers in Great Britain.

"Google AdWords allows online gambling advertisements to target Great Britain as long as the advertiser is registered with the Gambling Commission and provides a valid operating licence number," said the company.

"Advertisers based outside the UK and within the European Economic Area who wish to target online gambling ads to England, Scotland, or Wales must be licensed to advertise online gambling in their respective country."

Google advises that a specific account must be created solely for gambling advertisements, and that advertisers must complete a gambling ad application where operators must provide details and a copy of their gambling licence.

All gambling ads will be required to comply with relevant codes of practice such as the Gambling Act 2005, the CAP Code, the Gambling Industry Code for Socially Responsible Advertising and the Gambling Commission Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice.

Advertisers must also prominently display links to GambleAware or GamCare on the first page that is displayed when a consumer clicks on an ad.

Google will also require gaming operators to notify it immediately if they become the subject of any ruling by the Gambling Commission, the Advertising Standards Authority, or any other regulatory or industry body.

Furthermore, gaming operators will be responsible for enforcing Google's terms and conditions on their affiliates as the operator will be held liable by Google, regardless of who purchased the ad.

The search engine giant has also taken steps to ensure that minors will not be exposed to such content by ensuring that the ads will only appear when the 'Safe Search' filter is switched off.

Querem ver que finalmente querem terminar esta hipocrisia

Rank Reports 8% Fall in Revenue But Online Business Continues to Grow

ImageRank Group plc has released its interim management statement for the 41 weeks ended October 12th 2008, with the group reporting an 8% fall in total revenues. The group said the decline was due to actions taken to address the negative effects of the UK Gambling Act implemented last year, as well as the effects of the UK ban on smoking in public places.

Mecca Bingo saw revenues down 12% compared to the same period last year, with admissions also down 12% and spend per head at the same level as last year. Grosvenor Casino reported a 3% decline in revenues with admissions down 14% and spend per head up 10%.

The group’s Spanish bingo business, Top Rank Espana, continued to be affected by difficult prevailing economic conditions in Spain, reporting a 4% fall in revenues with admissions and spend per head both down 2%. This was offset by the strength of the Euro versus the Sterling however, which resulted in a 6% increase in reported revenue.

Rank's Blue Square interactive business was again the only division to achieve revenue growth during the period, increasing 1% on the back of 7% growth from its online gaming products and a strong performance from Meccabingo.com. Revenue from the company's sportsbook however continued to struggle, posting an 11% decline.

Last month Rank wrote to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to advise that the group would no longer pay VAT on games of interval bingo, consistent with the ruling of the Duties & VAT Tribunal in May 2008.

This is expected to result in an annualised cash benefit to the group of approximately £6m, with effect from July 2008. As HMRC has appealed the tribunal's decision, with the High Court due to hear the appeal in March 2009, the group says it does not intend to recognise revenue or operating profit benefits in the group's financial results at present.

Shares in Rank Group plc (LSE:RNK) have gained 6.67% to 60.00 pence in London this morning, 15.38% above the 52-week low of 52.00 pence set on October 10th.

DuplicatePoker.com unexpectedly shuts its doors

Just 20 days after circulating a press release that claimed it was "one of the fastest growing online poker communities," DuplicatePoker.com has been forced to shut down.

When Duplicate Poker players went to the site's home page on Sunday, they found the following statement:

Dear players,
Duplicate is sadly bidding farewell to its players. Caught in the middle of the global financial situation the company is not able to continue to provide service. We are a small victim of the global financial crisis.

Regretfully as of the today, October 5th, 2008 we are closing our service. We thank our players for being with us. Hopefully at later time and in a better economic climate Duplicate Poker will re-appear.

Sincerely,
The Duplicate Poker Team

It must have been a shocking development for those players since on Sept. 20 Duplicate Poker announced that it had registered its 250,000th player, reinforcing "the growing interest and success of this unique skill-based online poker game."

Pinhas Romik, the founder and CEO of Duplicate Poker, was quoted in the release as saying. "DuplicatePoker.com has quickly gained global appeal and poker players at all levels are playing this new game and developing new strategies for winning. Our revenues have increased six-fold since the public launch and we expect the game's popularity to continue its upward trajectory."

Duplicate Poker was considered a skill game because players didn't necessarily try to outplay opponents at their table, as is the case in a standard poker game. Players in corresponding seats at various tables were dealt identical poker hands, and the hands play out. Winners and losers were determined by the amount of chips won or lost in comparison with other players who were dealt the same cards.

The site unveiled a new look on its Web site in April and just this past summer it sent a player who won a tournament at the site to the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.

ASA bans Eric Cantona gambling ad

ENGLAND -- As reported by The Guardian: "An online ad campaign featuring Eric Cantona has been banned for suggesting gambling was an escape from personal problems.

"European gambling company Partouche Betting's digital ads used images of Cantona dressed as a medieval king with the straplines "Bet to forget" and "Click or regret".

"...The Advertising Standards Authority received a complaint that the digital ad was irresponsible because it "exploited the susceptibilities of vulnerable people" and suggested that gambling could "provide an escape from personal problems".

"...The ASA banned the ads..."
